    Dr. Roger is the introduction to his Thesaurus as it first appeared in 1852, defined the purpose of his new and original classification of English words and phrases. 'The present work he wrote', he wrote, " is intended to supply, with respect to the English language, a desideratum hitherto unsupplied in any language, namely, a collection of the words it contains and of the idiomatic combination peculiar to it, arranged not in alphabetical to the ideas which they express.
