    John Martin

With more than 40 years of experience in the Southern California housing industry, John Martin has a unique perspective on how builders can prosper and even flourish while the market goes through its inevitable ups and downs.

As a developer and homebuilder, he survived three painful recessions in the mid 1970s, early 1980s and early 1990s, and along the way, he conceived innovative new trends in home design that enabled the industry to transcend those economic setbacks.

As early as 1970, while serving as vice president of sales and marketing for the Mission Viejo Company, he researched and coordinated the design of the Madrid homes, which became the most popular product line in the 30-year history of the company with over 2,700 homes sold in 10 years. Also in 1970, he was the first recipient of the Max Tipton award for marketing excellence in Southern California.

Prior to that, he coordinated the research and design for William Lyons California Classics, an affordable housing project that sold over 3,000 homes throughout the state.

In 1975 and 1976, while serving as vice president of marketing for the Irvine Companys Homebuilding Division, he oversaw the design of Woodbridge Estates, which remains a community that planners and developers visit from all over the country to this day.

Rejoining the Irvine Company in 1986 as vice president of corporate marketing, one of Johns primary roles was to work with urban planners on multiple communities to ensure that they were market driven. During this period, Johns trip to the Mediterranean to study hillside development and urban places inspired the design of the first courtyard home neighborhood on the Irvine Ranch.

After guiding strategic planning for the buildout of the Valencia community in the early 1990s, John formed Martin Associates in 1996 to focus on the creation of active adult and master-planned communities as well as individual residential
